I usually like to send battalions in multiples of 2. Sometimes I even progress with every multiple of 2 to a certain point, so the enemy will see 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, and 1 battalions coming to attack. I can then start with the largest attack and see if it is victorious. As I reduce the enemy's numbers, smaller and smaller attacks are carried forth!

But other times, I prefer to send battalions in prime numbers. Some prime numbers "feel" effective... I sometimes get the sensation that 11 battalions attack better than 12, perhaps meaning one fewer lost battalion. It's all superstition, but seeing waves of 7, 11, 3, 5, 17, 13, and 23 battalions can be rather intimidating.

I've also heard of the "Lost" strategy... 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42... but I haven't tested those counts in order yet. :)
